1：一个享受的生活习惯

Usually, when I am alone, I go to the library to do some reading. It has become an essential part of my life. The
first time that I visited the library was when my roommate Anna took me there. I find there are no other places
on campus quieter and more suitable for study than the library.
As a matter of fact, I love going to the library almost every Saturday afternoon to read for a while. Also, if I feel
bored in general, I will head there to do some reading. While reading in the library, my mindset is the most placid
and calm.
This is a very simple routine to follow. Thus, whenever I want to concentrate on my studies or do some reading,
I will go there. I share my dormitory with four other people, so it is usually noisy. My roommates often talk or
play games in the dormitory, which makes it hard for me to concentrate. A quiet place can significantly help me
to study more efficiently. Even when I don’t have to study, I still like to go to the library to read all kinds of
interesting books, as these are free for students to borrow. I especially enjoy literature and history books.
Whenever I am immersed in a story, all my troubles seem to disappear.
I’m a very easily distracted person, and the library really gives me the perfect environment to focus on what I
want to do. I feel completely comfortable and relaxed in the library.
通常，当我一个人的时候，我喜欢去图书馆看书。这习惯已经成为我生活中不可缺少的一部分。第一次
去图书馆是我的舍友 anna 带我去的，从那以后我就喜欢上了图书馆。我发现在校园里，没有比图书馆

Flying a kite is a leisure activity that I loved doing when I was a child. The first time I encountered real kites was
in primary school when a teacher taught us how to make simple ones using white paper, wooden sticks, and
string.
I remember when I was very small, my grandfather would take me to fly kites in the park. It was the most
interesting activity that I looked forward to doing at that time. But back then, I was too young to fly a kite by
myself. Every time, my grandfather would launch the kite into the air first, and then I would run around holding
the end of the string. Whenever my grandpa took me to fly kites, I would be as happy as a clam all day long!
When I was young, I always had unlimited energy to play games. I couldn’t stand to stay at home and do nothing,
so I always liked to pester my elders to take me out. Time flies by, I have not flown a kite for a long time now,
partly because I am busy with my studies, and partly because there are so many new toys and entertainment
products now. On weekends, I prefer to lie at home watching TV or playing video games.

放风筝是我小时候非常喜欢的娱乐活动。我记得小学的时候老师就教过我们自制风筝，那是我第一次接
触它。在课堂上，老师教我们用白纸，木棍和绳子做成简易的风筝。
我记得在我很小的时候，爷爷总会带我去公园里放风筝。那是一段美好的回忆。也是我每周最期待的时
刻。对于那时候的我来说，能让手里的风筝在天空中飞起来是一件非常不可思议的活动。但那时候我年
纪太小，不会自己放风筝。每次都是我爷爷先把风筝放飞到空中，然后我再抓着绳子的一端到处乱跑。

带我出去玩。随着年龄的增长，我已经很久没有放风筝了，一方面是因为学生生活比较忙，另一方面是
因为现在新潮的玩具和娱乐方式太多了。周末的时候我更倾向于躺在家里看电视或者打游戏。

For most girls, myself included, Barbie dolls were a favourite childhood toy. To this day, I still like Barbie dolls
very much.
If memory serves, the first time I ever played with a Barbie doll was in primary school. I did well in the final
exam, so my mother bought one for me as a present. The most entertaining thing about Barbie dolls is that you
can easily customize them with different clothes, pants and shoes. For example, you can dress her in a skirt and
high heels, or give her beach pants and slippers.
I would frequently dress my Barbie in a variety of clothes, and I also liked to braid her hair. Unfortunately, the
doll’s hair would lose a lot of threads every time I braided it. I also used to make clothes for her with paper towels
and would draw my favorite patterns on them. Ordinarily, I played on my own at home. At the weekend however,
my friend and I would play together with our own dolls; one as the mother and the other as the daughter. It was
much more interesting than playing alone.
Playing with Barbie dolls is a beautiful memory from my childhood. When I was alone, I could play with my
Barbie for a long time without feeling lonely at all. Unfortunately, Barbie dolls were expensive. My mother could
only afford to buy one for me when I was a child. Even today, I still like Barbie dolls very much. If I can earn a
lot of money when I start working, I hope to buy a cabinet for my family to display plenty of Barbie dolls in.中

芭比娃娃几乎是每个女孩子小时候最喜欢的玩具，当然也包括我。直到现在我依然很喜欢芭比娃娃。
记忆中我第一次玩芭比娃娃应该是小学的时候。因为我期末考试考得很好，我妈妈买了一个芭比娃娃送
给我。芭比娃娃最好玩的地方在于你可以随意给它们穿不一样的衣服，裤子和鞋。比如可以给她穿裙子
和高跟鞋，也可以给她穿上沙滩裤和拖鞋。
我经常给它换不同的衣服。我还喜欢给芭比编头发，可惜她们的头发不经折磨，编一次就掉好多头发。
我还曾经拿纸巾给她们做衣服，在衣服上画自己喜欢的图案。平时我只能一个人在家玩，到了周末的时
候，我会和朋友一起用各自的娃娃过家家，一个人演妈妈一个人演女儿。这可比一个人玩有趣多了。
芭比娃娃是我童年的美好回忆。当我一个人的时候，我能和娃娃玩很久很久，一点也不觉得孤单。可惜
芭比娃娃很贵，小时候妈妈也只给我买过一个。现在我还是很喜欢芭比娃娃，如果我工作以后能赚很多

Not long ago, I bought a brand-new laptop on JD.com, the online shopping platform of Jingdong, an e-commerce
giant in China. And I was enraged to find out while window shopping on the site that the same product was
several hundred yuan cheaper than what it was, not even a week since I received mine.
I immediately called Jingdong’s customer service, hoping that I could recoup at least some of my losses. The girl
on the phone was nice and polite. She asked for my order number and verified my purchase details. After about
two minutes, she apologized for the inconvenience and advised that I could get a full refund of the price difference
by simply applying for it via the Jingding app.
It had been a truly smooth and pleasant shopping experience. Contrary to my expectations, making the complaint,
which took less than ten minutes, turned out to be an easy process. After the call, I submitted my request via the
app as per the instructions and received the refund that very afternoon. I’ve got to say that I couldn’t have been
more pleased with the outcome. Had I purchased the laptop at Computer City or anywhere else, getting a refund
might have been rather difficult. JD.com has proven itself a highly trustworthy shopping site and I am happy to
recommend it to my family and friends.

不久前，我在京东网上购买了一台全新的笔记本电脑。就在我收到电脑还不到一周的时候，某天我无意
中点开网页，发现同样的产品竟然比我购买的时候便宜了好几百元，那一刻我感到非常生气。
我立刻拨打了京东的客服电话，希望能挽回一些损失。接待我的是一个态度很好的女生，她询问了我的
订单号，并且核对了我的购买信息。大约两分钟之后，她向我表达了歉意，并且告诉我我可以自己在京

我认为这是一次非常顺利且愉快的购物体验。我本以为投诉过程会很麻烦，没想到竟然如此简单。全程
不过花费了十分钟。挂断电话后，我按照客服的指导在 app 上提交了申请，当天下午我就收到了退款。
我不得不承认这个结果让我非常满意。如果我在电脑城或者其他地方购买这台笔记本电脑，商家也许并
不会如此爽快的答应退款。京东网是一家非常值得信赖的购物网站，我很乐意把它分享给我的家人和朋
友。

4：不寻常的一顿饭
Describe a time when you had an unusual meal.

On my birthday this year, my boyfriend (girlfriend) and I had a wonderful time enjoying an exceptional dinner.
It was at a fancy restaurant in an upscale mall downtown which also happened to serve one of the most expensive
buffets in our city. Truth be told, I had always been intrigued by that place, which explained why I was particularly
looking forward to the treat there from my boyfriend. And boy, was I about to be dazzled by what was to come.
Not only was the dining hall richly decorated, but there were also live piano performances to entertain the guests.
Since my boyfriend made a point of reserving a window table, our meal came with the added benefit of a
charming, panoramic view of the CBD in all its night-time glory.
For me, it was a dining experience like no other. For one thing, I have rarely had the luxury of having pricey
meals at such a high-end restaurant. Having gotten used to the noisy environment of the school cafeteria where
I mostly ate, the quiet and graceful manners of the waiters and waitresses actually made me a bit uneasy. For
another, there was a great variety of food on offer, including salmon, sea urchins and foie gras, dishes I seldom,
if ever, got to taste.
The evening could not have turned out any better. My boyfriend and I chatted and feasted until quite late. And
there was even a small complimentary cake to take home. What a memorable, special dinner it was.

今年我过生日的时候，我和我的男（女）朋友享受了一顿不同寻常的晚餐。我认为那是一次非常美妙的

5：迟到
Describe a time when you were late for something important

About half a month ago, I had inflammation around one of my wisdom teeth. A lot of the time, the pain was so
bad I couldn’t even eat. That was when I decided to have the tooth removed. I managed to make a doctor’s
appointment online but was only able to book a time slot that was two weeks in the future (because of the doctors’
tight schedules).
A couple of days ago while out shopping with a friend, I received a call from the hospital and was asked to go
see the doctor as fast as I could since it was already past our agreed timeslot. I panicked. As the toothache had
gradually subsided and because it had been quite some time since I scheduled the appointment, the whole thing
had completed slipped my mind.
There was just no way for me to make it to the hospital in time since it was already four o’clock in the afternoon
and the doctor was supposed to get off work in an hour. I explained the situation to the nurse on the line and
apologized. The nurse helped me cancel the appointment and advised me that this would count as a default on
my part, and that after three defaults, I would be banned from making appointments with doctors at their hospital.
There was no denying that it was my mistake for not keeping the appointment and I felt ashamed for having
caused others inconvenience and wasting valuable medical resources. I made another doctor’s appointment that
night, but this time I took the extra step of setting a reminder on my phone. I am confident that I won’t repeat the
same mistake this time around.
大约半个月前，我的智齿发炎了，我经常因为牙痛而无法吃饭。那时候我下定决定要去拔掉这颗智齿。
我打开市口腔医院的预约网站，谁知道近期所有的时间都已经约满了，无奈之下我只能预约两周以后的
时间。
直到前几天，当我和朋友在外面逛街的时候，我突然接到了医院打来的电话，告诉我现在已经过了预约
时间，请尽快过来。我懵了。因为在我预约了看病时间后，我的牙渐渐不疼了，加上时间过去太久，我
已经完全忘了这件事。
当时已经下午四点多了，医院还有一个小时就要下班。即使我立刻赶去医院，时间也来不及了。我告诉
护士我不小心忘记了这件事，我感到很抱歉。护士帮取消了预约，并且告诉我她会在医院的系统上记录
这次违约。一旦我爽约超过三次，以后就不能挂号了。
事实上，忘记约定确实是我的过错，我的行为给他人带来了不便，浪费了医疗资源。我感到很羞愧。晚
上，我在网上重新预约了看医生的时间，并且用手机设置了提醒事项。相信这次一定不会再发生类似的
事情了。

6：想了解更多的历史

As a science student, I don’t know much about history. But if there is one period of time that piques my interest,
it is China’s Tang Dynasty.
I was first exposed to that period in my history classes in high school. Watching and listening to the teacher
describing to us with gusto all its wonders and glories, my curiosity about the golden age started to grow.
What little knowledge I possess of the Tang Dynasty comes mostly from textbooks and TV dramas. There were
quite a few popular TV series set in that era. In between the love stories of the main characters, I got to learn
about certain historical figures and events. What stood out for me the most was the fact that the dynasty gave the
nation its only female emperor, Wu Zetian. It was nothing short of amazing for Wu to climb to the pinnacle of
power and command the respect and support of her ministers at a time in history when women were considered
inferior to men. During her reign, Tang China flourished economically and culturally, with Chang’an (Xi’an),
the capital, leading the world as the most developed city.
Every stage of history provides a snapshot of the social and economic realities of a country at a point in time. I
want to understand how the Tang Dynasty managed its economic rise and what led to its eventual decline. Only
by figuring it all out can we draw lessons from the past, and that is what the study of history is all about.
中文思路：
作为一个理科生，我对历史了解的并不多。如果一定要选择一个感兴趣的，我想了解中国唐代的历史。
我第一次接触唐代历史是在高中的历史课上。当老师兴高采烈的向同学们描述唐代辉煌的历史时，我也
开始对这个朝代感到好奇。
我对唐代了解一点，但不多。大多来自于历史课本和电视剧。有几部热播的电视剧都是以唐代作为背景。
除了男女主角的爱情故事之外，我也学到了一些历史人物和历史知识。我印象比较深刻的是唐代产生了
中国历史上唯一的女皇帝武则天。要知道在古代中国，女性是不受重视的。武则天能成为皇帝，并且被
大臣们认可，是一件非常了不起的事。并且在她的治理下，唐朝的经济和文化都得到了充分发展，都城
长安一度成为全世界最发达的城市。
每一段历史都反映了当时国家的社会和经济状况，我想了解唐代是如何发展经济的，后期又是如何走向
衰败。我们只有了解了这些才能够从历史中总结经验教训，这是学习历史的最大意义。

I want to talk about studying French, which is a complicated and romantic language. French is the official
language of many regions and organizations. Because of its strict characteristics, formal and important documents,
such as the legal provisions, are written in French. My teacher once told me that the United Nations has set
English as its first speaking language, but French as its first written language.
I watched a foreign film last year, when I heard the characters in the film speaking French. I was touched by the
beautiful voice. It makes me feel very elegant to speak and hear this language, so I want to learn French. I have
learned some conversational phrases from the movie, but in order to learn it in a proper way, I chose a course at
my campus this semester to learn French from the beginning.
I think French is one of the most difficult languages in the world because the pronunciation of French and the
use of oral muscles is completely different from that of English. Some nasal and lingual sounds, in particular, are
big challenges for me. But I believe there is no shortcut to language learning except listening, speaking, and
practicing more. I’m looking forward to mastering this language well one day so that I can read some original
books and watch French movies.

我想谈谈学习法语，这是一门复杂而又浪漫的语言。法语是许多区域和组织的官方语言。由于它非常严谨，

A few months ago, a shopping mall opened its doors close to where I live. It is a large commercial center that
caters to customers’ shopping, dining, and other needs, and one, I must say, that has made my life a whole lot
easier.
In fact, I don’t exactly remember what used to occupy the land where the brand-new mega structure now stands.
It seemed to have been a sprawling warehouse if my memory serves me correctly. The lot was fenced off when
the construction of the mall began. And it took around a year for the work to be completed, during which time

It was around last year that all the elevators in our neighborhood were installed with advertising screens. And
since then, I have been subjected to ad attacks every time I go in and out of the buildings. Among my least
favorite ads was one by KFC.
The commercial was, of course, meant to increase awareness of and promote special offers from the fast-food
giant. I don’t quite remember the video content, which might have been images of burgers and fried chickens.
But I will never forget the voice-over. As if on repeat, the clip kept blaring the phrase “Crazy Thursday, Two for
¥9.90” over and over again. The speed with which the words were uttered, coupled with the jarring music in the
background, gave me the impression of a monk chanting fast in my ear, which was really irritating.
With TV, I can switch to another channel if there is a commercial I don’t like. In the case of the elevator ad by
KFC, however, that was not an option. I’d be exposed to it as long as I needed to take the elevator. And I found
that not particularly pleasant. Besides, I have a suspicion that the promotion had not been truthful. I have been
to a KFC restaurant on Thursdays. The “Two for ¥9.90” fried chicken featured in the ad was nowhere to be seen,
and practically every item that was supposed to be on sale was sold out. For these reasons, I do not take a liking
to KFC. If I feel like having fast food, I’d be more inclined to go with McDonald’s.

My high school holds my most cherished memories in life so far, and as such, I still remember my first day there.
It just so happened that, the year I was supposed to start, the school moved its campus from the city center to a
faraway place in the suburb. Given its remoteness, the site couldn’t be reached by subway and every single
journey for me would mean a long and tedious bus ride.
My very first and deepest impression of the school was the utter desolation of its surroundings. Grand and shiny
as the new campus was, there were no commercial establishments nearby. All that was there were wastelands
and villages waiting to be developed in the country’s urbanization drive. I would be lying if I didn’t say I was a
bit disappointed.
After a visit to the campus, however, my mood took a turn for the better. In addition to a classroom building one

were traditionally considered luxuries for a high school. Seeing so many unfamiliar faces in such an unfamiliar
environment, however, I couldn’t help but feel nervous and uneasy. And it wasn’t until I recognized and rejoined
a couple of classmates from junior high that my mind was finally put at ease.
I spent the next three happy years at the school. I had the joy of witnessing not only my own rapid growth in the
company of an ever-expanding army of friends but also the steady rise of the area around the campus, with a
land of nothing transformed into a mega shopping center. While those years may have been long gone, I will
always miss my first day of high school.

I am extremely grateful to Anna, my roommate, for showing up when I needed help the most.
It was on a morning several weeks ago when I was getting ready to go to class. I stepped out of the dorm to check
the weather so that I could decide what shoes to wear for the day. A strong wind came all of a sudden and before
I could react, the door slammed shut behind me with a loud bang.
My mind went blank. All I knew at that moment was that I had been locked outside with my pajamas and slippers
on. To make matters worse, I did not have my cellphone with me.
Luckily, I was able to borrow a phone from a classmate next door and get in touch with Anna. She was having
breakfast in the school cafeteria and told me she was on her way back after hearing what had just happened to
me. There she was, 15 minutes later, handing me the key with a smile like an angel.
It was winter and the temperature was low. Had it not been for Anna, my whole day would have been ruined and
I could very well have fallen ill. I couldn’t have thanked Anna enough. A friend in need is a friend indeed. By
putting aside whatever she was doing to bring me the key, Anna had proven herself a truly worthy friend. Should
she be in trouble someday, I would not hesitate to do whatever I can to help her out.

the presentation. I started to practice my presentation two weeks in advance in order to achieve a perfect outcome.
Whenever I was free, I would rehearse my presentation in front of a mirror in the dorm. Every day I would spend
at least 1 hour practicing in order to be able to give the speech without the script.
The reason our group was so highly acclaimed by our teacher was that, compared with other groups, we were
the most well-prepared one. Our PPT slides were exquisitely designed with rich content and well-researched
sources. Prior to the presentation, I’d already been confident about myself.
Team work is the most efficient way to complete a complex task. Everyone in my team is amazing. It is a pleasure
to work with them. We not only successfully completed the presentation but became close since then.

A little while ago, a few of us held a birthday celebration for Anna, a good pal of mine, at a barbeque shop. What
struck me the most about the diner was its terrible air.
As everyone knows, a good ventilation system is crucial for a barbeque restaurant. That is because, if not removed
in time, the smoke produced while barbequing could quickly make the air in the place insufferable. It might have
just so happened that something went wrong with their exhaust system on that day, or it may have always been
the case with the shop, but the smoke was so heavy that I couldn’t help but keep shedding tears. I tried to get the
problem solved by making a complaint to the waiters, but things did not get any better.
As someone with an acutely sensitive respiratory system, the poor air quality had the additional effect of making
me cough uncontrollably. As soon as we finished eating, I proposed that we go somewhere else to continue our

Not long ago, I bought an expensive SLR camera in order to take better pictures. I like to record the memorable
moments of my life, and I thought this camera would be the best tool to record them. But after I bought it, I found
it wasn’t as easy as I thought. There are several capture modes on the camera which are very complicated to
handle. I only knew how to use the automatic mode at first. The pictures I took were so different from what I
imagined it should be.
So, I spent days reading some books about photography which introduced the use of the SLR camera and how
to set complex parameters. Of course, it is also important to practice so I went to the park and other places to
take pictures. I devoted myself to learning it, and finally it took me about a month to master some basic skills of
photography. From then on, I often went out to take some photo with my camera. I gradually learned how to use
an SLR camera and was able to take some good pictures. My classmates all thought I was very good at
photography and usually asked me to take pictures of them when we went out.
Although I have made great progress now, I have to admit that there is still a big gap between me and professional
photographers. I still struggle to make good use of the light and shadow when capturing. A professional SLR is
a really hard thing to use.

watering them and letting them take a sun bath. Doing these activities fills me with a true sense of relaxation.

aside all the stresses of school and life. I don’t need to worry about getting up early for a morning class or rack

My friend Andrew is a very good friend to me, and last summer he was there for me in my time of need. Andrew
encouraged me and helped me achieve a goal when I thought I did not have the power to do it.
Last summer, my friends and I had all decided to visit Macau. Andrew is a big fan of extreme sports so he took
me to the Tower of Macau which is a famous site for bungee jumping. He advised me to have a try. Then I thought
for a while and consider that we got to do something crazy when we were young, so I made up my mind to go
bungee jumping with him.
However, just right before I was about to jump I started to panic. I wanted to cancel the entire thing but Andrew
came to my aid and gave me encouragement. He explained that he was also terrified, but it was very safe to do
this. He advised me to close eyes before jumping and in the end everything was going to be alright. We were
about to do something amazing which we would never forget. His words calmed me down and I was able to do
the bungee jump.
I felt very grateful for Andrew’s help. I was really scared of doing the bungee jump and I do not think I would
have been able to do it without him. Often all one needs are words of encouragement from a close friend and
then they can achieve anything.

There is a small café near my school. It opened just last year and is located on the most famous commercial street
in the university-clustered town. The café features an artistic decoration style that students love and changes the
interior decorations for different holidays.
I not only like taking selfies but most certainly also plain landscape photos, such as wooden shelves with assorted
books and retro furniture inside the café. There is also a message wall in the café where I can write things down
or draw pictures with a marker. These decorations make my photos increasingly impressive.
Variations become prominent with the time and season in which the photos are taken. Seasonal change tends to
infuse the café with distinct atmospheres and moods, as captured in my photos.
The interior’s theme is changed monthly in this café — that’s also a reason why I like taking photos there. For

Last summer vacation, I made a mind-blowing trip to Guangdong with my best friend, Lucy. We bought discount
airline tickets and spent two hours flying to Guangzhou. Then we visited many internet-famous landscapes and
ate many local snacks. Also, we all wanted to buy some presents for our parents and friends. After a few days,
we decided to take the high-speed train to Hong Kong because it is the fastest and most convenient means to get
there.
This high-speed train has just gone into operation in the past two years. The train was both very clean,
comfortable, and fortunately, not very noisy. We were tired to the boneand it was nice to be able to close our eyes
and rest knowing that the train was taking us to our destination. Time passed really, really quickly. It only took
us an hour to go to Hong Kong, which we were very satisfied with.
We got the most out of our journey and were happy as a clam that we chose to take public transportation. Since
it is both a cost-efficient and convenient way to travel rather than to drive. It would possibly take us 8 hours to
drive to Guangzhou and there is no way to drive to Hong Kong. What’s more, it would exhaust our energy to
drive for so long. So, I am more than willing to take public transportation to travel somewhere unfamiliar in the
future.
